Spotlight on South Africa: GEAS 2023 to Showcase South Africa’s Energy Sector

Green Energy Africa Summit 2023 Spotlighting Increasing Decentralization and Privatization in South Africa's Energy Landscape

South Africa has immense potential to further expand its renewable energy production when compared with other regions and represents a significant investment opportunity for regional and global power investors. To highlight the country’s dynamics and opportunities, GEAS 2023 is organizing a Country Spotlight on South Africa’s private sector-led energy transition.

South Africa’s energy sector is in the midst of profound transformations and is experiencing significant growth following new international partnerships, new auctions under its now famous Renewable Independent Power Producer Programme (REIPPP), and new pro-privatisation regulations.

In 2021, the country already became the first African country to launch a Just Energy Transition Partnership (JETP) to secure an initial $8.5 billion with France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the USA, and the European Union.

In December 2022, a new regulation made it possible for any generation facility with a point of connection on the transmission or distribution power system to be developed without a generation license.
Since then, the number and capacity of electricity projects registered with the regulator under these licensing exemptions has skyrocketed. 52 MW were registered in 2020, 86 MW in 2021, 1,658 MW in 2022, and over 3,000 MW in the first half of 2023 alone!

To further provide a strategy for the sector, South Africa finally released its South African Renewable Energy Master Plan (SAREM) this year – stepping up its green energy ambitions one step further.

To help understand the outlook of South Africa’s clean energy sector, the Country Spotlight on South Africa at GEAS 2023 will be moderated by Boston Consulting Group’s Managing Director and Partner Igor Lakic and welcome Liz Williamson, Head of Energy at RMB; Vuyelwa Mahanyele, Regional Sales Director at GE Gas Power (GE Vernova); Rentia van Tonder, Head of Power: Corporate & Investment Banking atnStandard Bank; Jonathan Hoffman, Chief Development Officer at Globeleq Africa Ltd; and Richard Doyle, Managing Director at JUWI.

The Green Energy Africa Summit 2023 will take place at CTICC2 in Cape Town on October 10th-11th, 2023. For more information on the programme or to register today, click here.
